Take Action: Protect Coastal Commissioners' Authority

The California Legislature is considering a bill that would dramatically undermine the ability of the Coastal Commission to protect our coast and ocean.

California Senate Bill 1295 (Ducheny) would strip the right of Coastal Commissioners to appeal development permits granted by local governments.

This oversight by the Coastal Commission is critical to fair and consistent enforcement of the Coastal Act. Senate Bill 1295, if enacted, would dramatically undermine this function and potentially allow numerous violations of the Coastal Act to “slip through the cracks.”

Tell the California Legislature that you oppose the weakening of the Coastal Commission’s oversight role and oppose Senate Bill 1295.

Surfer Health Study Kicks Off

Ever wonder if that sinus infection you caught had anything to do with the red tide you've been surfing in all week? Well the folks over at UC Berkeley are wondering the same thing and have launched a study that examines the correlation between water quality and surfers' health. If you live in the Santa Cruz area, surf "good waves" at least 30 minutes a week and have access to a computer ... you're golden. Contact surferhealth@gmail.com to get started. You could even win some cool surf gear and cash prizes up to $500. For more information on the study, including its confidentiality policy, go to www.surferhealth.blogspot.com.

Our Affect on the Oceans
More than 40 percent of the world's oceans are heavily affected by human activities, and few if any areas remain untouched, according to the first global-scale study of human influence on marine ecosystems.

By overlaying maps of 17 different activities such as fishing, climate change and pollution, the researchers have produced a composite map of the toll that humans have exacted on the seas.

Oil Update - New Spill Found in San Mateo

More Update

The nature of the spill turns out to be due to a natural cause according to this SF Gate article.

Via San Mateo County Health Department

On Monday January 28, 2008 the City of Pacifica and Fitzgerald Marine Reserve reported significant amounts of oil reported on their beaches. There have also been reports of oil impact to sea mammals. There has not been any reports of a new oil spill and at this time we are assuming this oil is remnants from the Cosco Busan spill. At this time, San Mateo County has requested a Response Team from the Unified Command. It has been confirmed that a Hot Shot team is responding to access and address the oil. You are receiving this email as you were identified as an interested party during the Cosco Busan spill in Nov 2007.

At this time we are asking that if you or any of your members receive any reports of oil on the San Mateo County coast, to report that oil to (650) 363-4790.
